For nearly 20 years Robert made Early American Longrifles for historical reenactors, hunters and competition shooters. Following in the tradition of many 18th century gunmakers, he bought the best barrels and locks available but hand made all other parts, including the hand forged iron mounts. His work has been featured in several publications including "MuzzleLoader" magazine.
These days most of his time is spent building historical furniture. His work is highly influenced by the Back Country craftsmen who worked in Kentucky and Tennessee during the late 18th and early 19th century. Inlaid pieces are of special interest.
Darrall does not use electric tools. Instead he uses only traditional hand tools. "I have a period chest full of original 18th century tools that are used daily. There is something amazing about planing a board or cutting a moulding with the same tool that was used by the hands of a skilled craftsman 200 - 250 years ago".
He is currently accepting a limited number of commissions and usually has a piece or two ready for sale. Robert also buys and sells original 18th century woodworking tools.
